Love is Action

Image
This is how we have come to know love: He laid down His life for us. We should also lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has this world’s goods and sees his brother in need but closes his eyes to his need — how can God’s love reside in him? 1Jn 3:16 Recommended articles: · Brotherly love · Is "Hesed" equal to "agape"? · label: Our Living Word · Luther about incessant faith

Parkinson’s Law of Buildings

Image
"Why You May Want To Tear Down That Monument" by Jonathan David Lewis Forbes Agency Council By 1933, the precursor to the United Nations, the League of Nations, was considered largely defunct. In 1937, it moved into a lavish new headquarters called the Palace of Nations. Since the end of the Cold War, NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) has struggled with an identity crisis. In 2018, it moved operations into a massive new headquarters in Belgium. In 2016, Lego celebrated its largest sales year in its history by announcing a new, state-of-the-art headquarters. The next year, sales dropped 8% and Lego announced 1,400 layoffs. What is going on? Why do organizations often build incredible structures as they decline? This strange phenomenon was actually first noted by British naval historian Cyril Northcote Parkinson . He called the phenomenon “Parkinson’s Law of Buildings” . Parkinson’s Law states that “…a perfection of planned ...

Is "Hesed" equal to "Agape"?

Image
God is Love – 1/3 The shapes of the love — A study on divine love and the intertwined Christian character ..how the two loves are linked Kindness and faithful love (hesed) pursue me every day of my life. I make my home in the house of YHWH for all time to come. Psalm 23:6 For this is how God (agape) loved the world: he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. John 3:16 What is Hesed? The word that is translated to “faithful love” is the Hesed (חסד) which is a Hebrew word that is difficult to translate directly, as it encompasses a range of concepts including "love, kindness, loyalty, mercy", and "covenant faithfulness". This word is translated in other places as “goodness,” and “steadfast love.” God's love for His covenant people in the Old Testament is expressed by the Hesed . This love expressed in the Hebrew texts as hesed we'emet for example in Gen 24:49; 32:11; 47:...

10 Disciplines of a Godly Man

Image
Paul’s instructions on discipline Purity, Relationships, Mind, Devotion, Integrity, Tongue, Work, Perseverance... by: R. Kent Hughes Train in God's Gym Men, we will never get anywhere in life without discipline, and doubly so in spiritual matters. None of us is inherently righteous, so Paul’s instructions regarding spiritual discipline in 1 Timothy 4:7–8 take on personal urgency: “Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." That word “train” comes from the Greek word from which we derive gymnasium. So, I invite you into God’s Gym—to some pain and great gain! 1. Discipline of Purity Sensuality is the biggest obstacle to godliness among Christian men. The fall of King David should not only instruct us but scare the sensuality right out of us! Fill yourself with God’s Word—memorize passages like 1 Thessalonians 4:3–8, Job ...

Grace upon Grace

Image
My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He Himself is the atoning sacrifice {propitiation} for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world. 1Jn 2:1-2 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1Jn 1:9 The Faithful Who Stands in the Gap When we drop our guard and we sin (which the Apostle John knows will happen & we should confess), praise God that our saviour Jesus faithfully stands in the gap,* defends us, and is the one who forever states our innocent plea before God the Father. Indeed, from His fullness we have all received grace after grace (grace *upon grace: in place of grace already given) for the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. John 1:16-17 Through Moses came the Law. The ...

Prayer Basics

Apostolic Instructions on Prayer, and the technical meaning of "Christ". First of all, then, I urge 1 that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone 2 , for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life 3 in all godliness and dignity. This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For 5 there is one God and one mediator between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, Himself human, who gave Himself — a ransom for all 6 , a testimony at the proper time. ... I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument... 7 1Tim 2:1-6,8 (Holman C.S.B.) Notes 1 "I emphatically tell you.." It's not a command but a strong suggestion with apostolic authority. 2 "for everyone" means everyone. The next verses explain the social layers and ...

The breastpiece (breastplate)

The shapes of the love — A meditation   God is Love – 3/3 The High Priest in the Old Testament : You are to make an embroidered breastpiece (breastplate) for making decisions.. ... Place a setting of gemstones on it, four rows of stones: ... The 12 stones are to correspond to the names of Israel’s sons. Each stone must be engraved like a seal, with one of the names of the 12 tribes. Exo 28:15.17.21 The breastpiece on the High Priest Whenever he enters the sanctuary, Aaron is to carry the names of Israel’s sons over his heart on the breastpiece for decisions, as a continual reminder before the Lord. Exo 28:29 ↑ ↓ The High Priest in the New Testament : ..because He, Jesus remains forever, He holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore, He is always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them. Heb 7:24-25   In these turbulent times, we must recognize Christ’s true ...

What the early chapterhouses teach us today

series: Central Spaces Wells Cathedral, Somerset cc 1275 - 1310 Before you read or listen to this article I really recommend that you may open and read the associated pre study here: about the stage effect . This gives an insight into how frontal performance, action (on the stage, then on the screen) has influenced our modern media-fuelled society and how it works in the church. Yes. Indeed in the Church - when Sunday worship is slowly and gradually reduced to a kind of performance and service—for visitors. However, this is a postmodern phenomenon {or diagnose}, not the normal way of life for the community. I'd like to recommend this booklet for help or contemplation, NOT like a pre-digested, instant doctrine. The entrance of your words gives light

Image
Enduring Word by David Guzik - Apple podcast audio Here we go, Psalm 119 verses 130 - 131, where we read this: "The entrance of your words gives light, it gives understanding to the simple. I opened my mouth and panted for I longed for your commandments." It's a theme mentioned before in Psalm 119, but in these two verses, the author of the great Psalm repeated the theme, he says, "the entrance of your words gives light." The idea is simple. God's word brought light to the psalmist. The Word of God makes things clearer, not cloudier. When the word came in, light and clarity also came. African tent - Image by vwalakte on Freepik The Hebrew word that's translated ' entrance ' here can have two meanings, depending on how it's pronounced. With one sound, the word means 'door' , and with another pronunciation, it means 'revelation' .. Now, according to one commentator, James Montgomery Boyce , ...

és az Úr ingadozó edénye Tanulmány 2. A 2 Sámuel 6-ban leírt konfliktus valójában Dávid és az Úr konfliktusa. Bár ez egy szörnyű következményekkel járó eset, a drámai kezdet ellenére ez rendkívül erős indulás Dávid számára, az ő személyes identitásának és istentiszteletének megtisztítása, helyre igazítása. Királyságának szellemi alapja itt lett megszilárdítva a következő történelmi időszakra. Az Uzza konfliktus oka, röviden Izrael királyai informálva voltak a Szent dolgok rendjéről, ide értve a Szent sátor és Láda használatát és szállítását is. A Szövetség Ládájának közössége nemcsak a papság de a király közössége is. .... Amikor Dávid belépett életének új, diadalmas korszakába mint nemzetének királya ő is éppúgy alá lett vetve a rendelkezéseknek mint minden levita pap és vezetőé. Tehát informálva kellett legyen a Szövetség Ládája szállításáról is. Nos. Nem volt informálva. Két dolgot, két perspektívát mindenképp tanulhatunk ebből. A. Miért vitté...

The misled leader 2

Image
and the teetering vessel of the Lord Study 2. The conflict described in 2 Samuel 6 is really a conflict between David and the Lord. Although it is an incident with dire consequences, despite its dramatic beginning, it is an extremely powerful departure for David, a cleansing and righting of his personal identity and his worship. The spiritual foundation of his kingdom was here solidified for the next period of history. The reasons for the Uzza conflict, in brief The kings of Israel were informed about the order of the Holy things, including the use and transport of the tabernacle and ark. The community of the ark is not only the community of the priesthood but also the community of the king. .... When David entered the new, triumphant era of his life as king of his nation, he was subject to the ordinances as were all Levitical priests and leaders. So he had to be informed about the transport of the ark. Well. He was not informed. Two things, two perspec...

II. Almost Incredible Promises - Part 1.

Image
From the book: The Kneeling Christian by Albert Richardson If you have faith and doubt not … all things, whatsoever you shall ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive. Mt 21:22 "When we stand with Christ in glory, looking o'er life's finished story," the most amazing feature of that life as it is looked back upon will be its prayerlessness. We shall be beside ourselves with astonishment that we spent so little time in real intercession. It will be our turn to wonder . In our Lords last discourse to His loved ones, just before the most wonderful of all prayers, the Master again and again held out His kingly golden scepter and said, as it were, "What is your request? It shall be granted unto you, even unto the whole of My kingdom." Do we believe this? We must, if we believe our Bibles. Shall we just read over very quietly and thoughtfully one of our Lord's promises, reiterated so many times? If we had never read them be...
