Talking us into surrender

David Guzik – Enduringword.com ..the Rabshakeh said to them (Judah), “Say to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this trust of yours? Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? In whom do you now trust, that you have rebelled against me? Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him...‘” Isaiah 36:4-6 Isaiah chapter 36 and 37 describes the Lord's work against the Syrian threat.. All these things happened during the reign of the godly king Hezekiah in Judah 700 BC. ... We can see the ugly arrogance of the Israel's enemies, and the raising despair in the hearts of the people and leaders of Judah. ... the Rabshakeh was not a name but a title of a field commander of the Syrian army. He was there to represent the Syrian king. He challenged the servants of king Hez...

God's Highway of Holiness

Daily devotion from David Guzik – enduringword.com Today let's talk about God's highway of holiness. I'm going to read you from Isaiah chapter 35 verse 8 where we read. A highway shall be there and a road and it shall be called the highway of holiness. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it shall be for others, whoever walks the road although a fool shall not go (astray). Most of us today take good roads for granted. We may have to live with the frustrations of endless road construction, detours and delays, but it's all for the purpose of giving us good, safe roads. We travel today over distances and at speeds that were absolutely unthinkable for people in the ancient world and we rarely think that it's something special. But in the ancient world it was different. A good road was a remarkable technological achievement. A good road meant trade, progress and security. A good road cost a lot of money to make and to maintain and most people traveled ...

Stand

by David Guzik – Enduringword.com I'm David Guzik and today for a brief devotional thought I want to read to you what the Holy Spirit spoke through the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 6 verse 13 where we read this: “Therefore, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand.” Eph. 6:13 (NKJV) Now, Paul introduced the idea of the whole armor of God way back in Ephesians 6 verse 11, two verses prior. And in the following verses he detailed the specific items related to the armor of God. In this verse, Ephesians 6 verse 13, he simply states what the main purpose of spiritual warfare and the armor of God is. Simply said, we're given the spiritual armor so that you may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand. This describes what we use the strength of God for and the armor of God for. You see, the primary picture in Paul's mind is not that the Christian goes out attacking spir...

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood

Image
by David Guzik – Enduringword.com Today I want to remind you that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, and read you from Ephesians 6, verse 12, where we read this: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Eph. 6:12 (NKJV) The fact that our real battle is not against flesh and blood is lost on many followers of Jesus. They put all their efforts in that direction. Paul's idea here in Ephesians 6 is much the same as in 2 Corinthians 10, verses 3 and 4, where he wrote this: “for though we walk in the flesh, we do not war, according to the flesh, for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” 2 Cor. 10:3-4 (NKJV) Then Paul described just whom we do battle against. He said its principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of ...

His preserving power

The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.. Psalm 121:8 New King James v. It's a beautiful phrase in the verse 8: "The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in" that's another way of saying: "in every event of life." And then, the last line: "from this time forth, and even forevermore" that's a way of saying: "at all time " will God do this. How we can thank and praise our God for His preserving power in our lifes! See the full Bible comment about Ps121 in David Guzik's website: Enduringword.com

The man after God's own heart

Image
David Guzik – enduringword.com ..let's talk about the man after God's own heart, reading from 1 Samuel chapter 13 verses 13 and 14. “You have done a foolish thing,” Samuel said {to king Saul}. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” NIV King Saul sinned foolishly before the Lord. He failed to keep God's commandment and Saul made excuses instead of getting right with God. It wasn't only that Saul sinned, the sin came from a heart far from God. Therefore God promised to take the kingdom away from Saul and his family. Through the prophet Samuel, God told Saul, 'but now your kingdom shall not continue'. From these words, we might expect Saul to be removed as king right at that m...

Az Isten szíve szerint való ember

Image
A bűn Istentől távol álló szívéből fakadt. Ezért Isten megígérte, hogy elveszi Saultól és családjától a királyságot. Sámuel próféta által Isten azt mondta Sa...

About holiness

Image
by David Guzik - Enduring Word Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? 1Sam 6:19-20 the whole story: 1Sam 6:1-21 You see, in their disrespect for God, the men of Beth Shemesh offended the holiness of the Lord. They knew that the Lord was holy, but it didn't make them want to be closer to God. It made them want to distance themselves from God. The basic idea behind holiness is not moral purity, although it includes moral purity, but the basic idea behind holiness is the idea of apartness, that God is separate. He's apart different from His creation, both in His essential nature that's who He is and in the perfection of His attributes, His character and what He does. When men encounter the holiness of God, they are not necessarily attracted to it. When Peter saw the holy power of Jesus, he said, depart from me for I am a sinful man, O Lord. (That's in Luke chapter 5, verse 8.) When the disciples on another occasion saw the holy Jesus s...

We keep ourselves in the love of God

Image
by David Guzik - Enduring Word Today, I want to talk to you about walking forward with God and to do so by looking Inward. Teaching from the Apostle Jude I'm going to read you from Jude, chapter 1, and thoroughly is one chapter in this book of Jude... This is Jude, chapter 1, verses 20 and 21, where we read: But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. (previously) Jude explained in his letter warnings about certain men who were a danger to the church. And in response, Jude did not tell us to go out and crush those certain men who were a danger to the church, instead, he told us to focus on our walk with the Lord, to help others who were affected by those certain dangerous men, and for us to put our focus on God. ... We are simply to pay such dangerous men no attention except what is necessary for our w...

Megőrizzük magunkat Isten szeretetében

Image
by David Guzik - Enduring Word Ma arról szeretnék beszélni nektek, hogyan haladjunk Istennel együtt előre. Ezt tegyük úgy, hogy befelé nézünk. Júdás apostol tanítása Júdás könyvének 1. fejezetéből fogok felolvasni nektek, alaposan végigvesszük a fejezetet ebben a könyvben... ... Egyszerűen nem szabad az ilyen veszé...

Looking, weeping, and living

Image
About Zech 12:10 By David Guzik – Enduring Word Today, let's talk about looking, weeping, and living . I'm going to read you from Zechariah 12, verse 10, where we read this. And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and supplication. Then they will look on me whom they have pierced. Yes, they will mourn for him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for him as one grieves for a firstborn. Zechariah 12:10 Zechariah 12 is all about a great outpouring of the spirit of God upon his ancient people of Israel. He promises to bless, restore, and strengthen them in the last days. As Zechariah tells us in chapter 12, verse 10, part of this great outpouring of strength and might to defend Jerusalem will be an outpouring of his spirit. But it will be for grace and supplication. God will move among Israel and bring saving grace and repentant prayer. Then God made a remarkable promise: Then they will look o...

Covenant Assurance

Image
By David Guzik {enduringword.com} on May 26, 2024 (Abraham) said, “Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will inherit it?” Genesis 15:8 Jesus spoke of faith that could move mountains (based on Matthew 17:20), but often our doubts seem to create those mountains. Trusting God and His promises is a constant challenge, faced by everyone who has ever tried to chase away doubt. Sometimes doubt comes from unbelief – an attitude that doubts God will keep His word or can keep His promises. Other times doubt is connected to faith that is growing and maturing; a doubt that recognizes that there is no weakness or wavering in God, but we are weak in our ability to trust. This was the kind of doubt that led a desperate father to say to Jesus, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24) God promised Abram a son and he waited ten (10!) years. Abram was successful in business and every other enterprise, but he thought “what good is all that without the fulfillment of God’s promis...

Big Use of Small Things

Image
24th of May 2024 by David Guzik Let's talk about when Gd makes a "Big Use of Small Things". For who has despised the day of small things? For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. They are the eyes of the Lord, which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth. Zech 4:10 Zechariah's question rings through us today. Almost every one of us might answer: "I have despised the day of small things." After all, God has a wonderful, though perhaps difficult, purpose for those days. These words were first directed to Zerubbabel, who led the city government of Jerusalem and was in charge of the project to rebuild the Temple. The work had stalled for many years, yet the Lord called it only a day of small things for Zerubbabel. It must have seemed like a very long day because the work of the temple was paused for almost 20 years. He probably would say to God, what do you mean a day of small things? I've live...

Through faith and patience

Image
By David Guzik – Enduring Word I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 12:2-3 God told a Mesopotamian man from an idol-worshipping family to leave his land and his family, and to receive a wonderful promise. God promised Abram a land, a nation, and a blessing. Abram only partially obeyed. First, he traveled half-way to the place God told him to go, and he brought his father and nephew with him, though God had told him to leave his family. Yet in God’s grace and goodness, He worked with Abram’s partial obedience and eventually Abram came to the land of Canaan – the land God promised him. Abram would become a giant of faith, even being the father of the believing (Galatians 3:7-9); yet he did not start as a hero of faith. We see Abram as an example of growin...

The Four Freedoms

Image
In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s house will be established   at the top of the mountains and will be raised above the hills. Peoples will stream to it, and many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us about His ways so we may walk in His paths.” For instruction will go out of Zion and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He will settle disputes among many people's and provide arbitration for strong nations   that are far away. They will beat their swords into plows, and their spears into pruning knives. Nation will not take up the sword against nation, and they will never again train for war. But each man will sit under his grapevine and under his fig tree with no one to frighten him. For the mouth of the Lord of Hosts has promised this. Micah 4:1-4 {Holman C.S.B} i. Micah 4:1-3 is repeated in Isaiah 2:1-3. Since Isaiah and...

The entrance of your words gives light

Image
Enduring Word by David Guzik - Apple podcast audio Here we go, Psalm 119 verses 130 - 131, where we read this: "The entrance of your words gives light, it gives understanding to the simple. I opened my mouth and panted for I longed for your commandments." It's a theme mentioned before in Psalm 119, but in these two verses, the author of the great Psalm repeated the theme, he says, "the entrance of your words gives light." The idea is simple. God's word brought light to the psalmist. The Word of God makes things clearer, not cloudier. When the word came in, light and clarity also came. African tent - Image by vwalakte on Freepik The Hebrew word that's translated ' entrance ' here can have two meanings, depending on how it's pronounced. With one sound, the word means 'door' , and with another pronunciation, it means 'revelation' .. Now, according to one commentator, James Montgomery Boyce , ...

Not Worried About Anything

Image
by David Guzik Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6 In prayer, believers sometimes are hesitant to simply ask for what they need. Maybe we worry that we are bothering God, so instead of asking we settle for less, do the best we can, and decide to wait until things are really bad before we pray about it. It shouldn’t be that way. In Philippians 4:6, God tells us at least two things: – NO-thing should fill us with anxiety. – EVERY-thing can be made a matter of prayer. Remember: "be anxious for nothing" is presented as a gentle command, not as an option. Undue care trespasses {intrusively} into God’s territory for our lives. Chosen anxiety make us to be the "father" of the household instead of a child. Of course, there is a difference between chosen anxiety and a godly concern, but every worry and undue concern the believer chooses to cl...
