The shepherd - Who is the door

Image
connection between shepherd and door {study} ...he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. John 10:2 A: The gates {and doors} were the place for elders' leaders' gatherings in the ancient towns. In this way - they symbolises the rank and the Authority. The gatekeeper obeys the rule of the town. But - as we can see later in the verse John 10:7 the shepherd himself also - the door. "Political and spiritual leaders were often called shepherds in the ancient world (Isaiah 56:11, Jeremiah 3:15). Jesus explained that not everyone among the sheep is a true shepherd; some are like thieves and robbers. One mark of their being a thief and a robber is how they gain entry among the sheep. The idea is that there is a door, a proper way to gain entry. Not everyone who stands among the sheep comes that way. Some climb up some other...

The Gospel, spreading throughout the Roman Empire

Image
by Lex Loizides A number of factors helped the somewhat surprising spread of the Christian Faith across the Roman world which began in the first century. 1. The political unity of the Roman Empire did produce a certain economic and political stability, notwithstanding its many faults. This encouraged trade between large cities and regions. 2. The military and trade routes meant relatively easy access to large numbers of people (both by land and sea). Joel Kotkin writes, ‘Rome allowed considerable self-government to individual cities; the empire itself, notes the historian Robert Lopez, functioned as a ‘confederation of urban cells.’ Europe would not again see such a proliferation of secure, and well-peopled cities until well into the nineteenth century. People, products, and ideas traveled quickly through the vast archipelago of ‘urban cells’ over secure sea-lanes and fifty-one thousand miles of paved roads stretching from Jerusalem to Boulogne… Christianity’s rapid...

The reliability of the Bible - 3. New Testament

Image
3. The New Testament   {Summary} Roman-Spatha-sword-ring {seal-ring} Question and challenges The reliability of the New Testament documents faces several challenges. First, is the Jesus of the Synoptic Gospels (recorded by Matthew, Mark, and Luke) a real, historical character, or are these accounts more of a fictional narrative? Second, does the Gospel according to John contradict the Jesus of the Synoptic Gospels? Third, is the early church history as recorded in the Book of Acts historically accurate and coherent? Fourth, are the New Testament Epistles written by the individuals purported to be their authors? Br Fifth, do other writings exist that should be added to the New Testament canon? Sixth, how can we be sure that the original documents have been faithfully copied and made available to us today? Finally, can we trust the reliability of books that record supernatural events like the resurrection of Jesus? For the casual reading ...

Near Eastern religion VS OT

Image
Old Testament religion is treated as essentially one more primitive religion among many, although slightly more advanced in the evolutionary stage of development. But there are also substantial and significant differences between Israel’s religion and that of her neighbors. Furthermore, the genuine similarities do not require literary dependence or borrowing. This article will summarize the primary features of ancient Near Eastern religion, contrast them with the Old Testament, and offer another explanation for the similarities between the biblical and non-biblical religions. Paul Through Mediterranean Eyes

Image
Kenneth Bailey's book has a key importance of understanding the view and culture of the most famous apostolic teacher: Paul. ... the main thrust of Bailey's approach has to do with his understanding of the rhetorical features of the book. Bailey places his methodological approach on the table when he states, “the basic presupposition of this study is that Paul's Hebrew literary heritage profoundly influences Paul's rhetorical style” (p. 53). Bailey, contrary to most traditional approaches, argues that the book is not so much addressing ad hoc issues and questions of a particular church as much as it is a theologically themed argument that is both coherent and highly sophisticated. While Bailey concedes that the structure of 1 Corinthians involves a Corinthian correspondence, Bailey argues that “some of the Corinthians' questions (oral and written) are worked into Paul's outline , instead of the other way around. ... to the site →
