Background

How the Book of Hebrews Fits Into the big story of the Bible

The Bible is one continual story...

...with different genres and not always chronological.

...yet one message is told from start to finish: Creation, fall, redemption, re-creation

Old Testament msg: “Messiah promised”

New Testament msg: “Messiah has come"

The New Testament church was dominantly Jewish. But a problem arose. Some Jews (“Judiazers”) said in order to be a good Christan you had to be a faithful Jew. The Apostles cried, “No!” In fact, Paul wrote the Book of Galatians to counter what the Judiazers were saying.

Some Jewish Christians were slowly drifting back toward Judaism and away from Christ. The Book of Hebrews was written to stop that drift (Hebrews 2:1).

Christianity is NOT "Reformed Judaism". Rather, it is a FULFILLMENT of the Old Testament promised Messiah King (Isaiah 9:6-7, Daniel 7:13-14) and the promised New Covenant (Jeremiah 31:31; Ezekiel 36:26-27).

The Book of Hebrews is written to stop the drift back to Judaism by showing that "Jesus is better". He is better than anything or anyone that has come before. Or ever will come.

The Better Priest

JESUS IS a BETTER priest than the Jewish Levitical priests. Jesus is from the order of Melchizedek, not Levi. (Hebrews 7:11-19)

1 Jesus is not from the Levi line

• All Jewish Old Testament priests were related to Levi, the original Jewish priest. If someone was not from Levi's lineage, he could not be a priest.

• Jesus was not from the line of Levi; he was from the line of Judah.

2 Rather Jesus is from the Melchizedek line

• David in Psalm 110 describes the Messiah to come. In verse 4 David writes, "You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”

• Melchizedek was not a priest based on “bodily descent” but by the “power of an indestructible life.” (Heb. 7:16)

   - No genealogy; no birth, no death

   - Melchizedek was a priest and a king (Genesis 14:18

3 And “by the power of an indestructible life” (v. 16

• Jesus is ultimately superior as a priest because Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

• Jesus Is the priest who resides over the New Covenant (“the law made nothing perfect,” v. 19

• Jesus is both the priest and the sacrifice. He Is "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." (John 1:29)
