The Castellarnau House

History

Tarragona, Spain, Cavallers Street
The first documented evidence we have tells us that there was a noble house on this site at the beginning of the 15th century. In 1542, together with other houses in Cavallers Street, it was the residence of Emperor Charles V during his stay in Tarragona.
In 1764, the house became the property of the Castellarnau family who had moved to Tarragona a few years earlier as a result of the marriage, in 1748, of Carles de Castellarnau to Maria Magriñà.
When Carles de Castellarnau died, the work needed on the building and particularly the new façade was continued by his widow and his brother, Baltasar de Castellarnau, who commissioned an architect from Barcelona, Josep Prat i Delorta.
In 1771, the house was inherited by Josep-Antoni de Castellarnau i Magriñà (1763-1845), a Knight of the order of Charles lll and one of the main promoters of the construction of the modern port (1789-1802). He also held various municipal posts, including those of city lawyer (1797-1800) and councillor (1805 and 1815).
In 1954, the Castellarnau ancestral home was acquired by the Tarragona City Council from its last owner, Enriqueta de Castellarnau i Miró, in exchange for a life pension.
